Best (and Worst) Clean Protein Coffees
Hi, I'm Melissa 👋
I'm a coffee lover and the editor here. I've tested hundreds of products to help you find the one that covers what you actually need — not what worked for someone else.
I work out hard, but I always noticed other girls made way more progress than I did. You know, the ones with perfect abs, toned legs, and the perfect figure. The difference was that I could never get enough protein in my diet, and I hated every shake I tried. Some tasted like chalk, others made me bloated and sluggish.
I thought they were all the same, but people kept recommending different products telling me, "this one is different." I was skeptical, but I decided to set out on a mission to test all the viral favorites, most recommended protein coffees, and more popular protein coffees. Then, I ranked them to find the absolute best protein coffee on the market.
How I Tested Each Protein Coffee
Everybody is different with different protein needs, but I wanted to be as objective as possible to find options that work for as many people as possible.
So, I looked for protein coffees with real food ingredients that taste great, feel great, and aren't full of junk. And I especially didn't want any that made me feel too bloated to workout.
To ensure the best ranking based not only on personal preference, but on objective factors, I tried each protein coffee over the course of several days. This is the process I used:
- Found & Tried the Most Popular Brands
- Reviewed Ingredient Lists (And Transparency)
- Checked Protein Content
- Evaluated Sweeteners
- Judged Taste and Texture
- Wrote Down How I Felt After
- Scored & Ranked Each Protein Coffee

What I Love
Habitone Protein Coffee feels like a luxury option. The Original option tastes like real coffee. Even the flavored versions don't have a strong “gym protein” taste or weird sweetener aftertaste. That means no sugar and no artificial sweeteners. The result is a cleaner feeling protein coffee without any bloating or discomfort.
However, the most surprising thing about Habitone for me was the taste. This was one of the protein coffees I tried, so I was expecting some "off" flavor like the others, but instead it created a creamy and delicious drink that tastes like real coffee. No clumps, strong protein taste, or weird sweetener aftertaste.
The fact that it's lab tested is more than just a bonus. I recently read a Harvard Health article that said many protein powders contain toxins, BPA, heavy metals, and other contaminants "with links to cancer and other health conditions." That's why I will always stick with Habitone because I know it's lab tested.
And the best part, you can try it risk-free. If you don't like it, you can get your money back within 30 days.
What Could Be Better
Since the best price is only available on the official website, you won't be able to pick this up at the store. Luckily, you can subscribe, save money, and make sure you never run out.
But the main issue is that they frequently sell out of their most popular flavors, like chocolate and vanilla. If it's in stock, make sure you grab your favorite.
Chike
| Specs | Details |
|---|---|
| Protein Content | 10g per scoop |
| Taste | Milky and sweet |
| Artificial Sweeteners | Sucralose |
| Added Sugar | 1g |
| Gut Friendly | No |
| Price Per Serving | $2.86 |
Verdict:
This protein coffee packs 20 grams of protein into a serving (their serving size is two scoops), and tastes quite good. The problem is that it also has a weak and muted coffee taste, mixes thick and clumpy, and uses sucralose, which is why it lands as my second favorite despite the high protein.
Pros:
- 20g of Protein Per Serving
- Lots of Flavours, Mocha Through Caramel
- Decent Taste, Goes Down Easily
Cons:
- Weak, Muted Coffee Taste
- Thick and Clumpy — Blender Only
- Sucralose as the Main Sweetener
- Expensive Per Serving
- Little Beyond Protein and Flavour
What I Love
I love that this option packs 20 grams of protein into a serving. Even better, it has a lot of flavors to choose from. They have options ranging from mocha to caramel! Love that.
Plus, it has a decent taste and goes down easily as well. It's a great protein coffee if you don't mind the big downside that holds it back.
What Could Be Better
There are a few things that prevent this protein coffee from beating Habitone. First, it feels almost impossible to mix smoothly with a frother. It's always thick and clumpy. However, that's not enough to hurt its ranking.
It's the weak and muted coffee taste, sucralose, and high price that really prevent me from raving about Chike. It tasted more like a milky, sweet, flavored protein shake than coffee every time I took it. That was enough for me to choose another protein coffee for my daily use.
FlavCity
| Specs | Details |
|---|---|
| Protein Content | 25g per scoop |
| Taste | Creamy, not coffee |
| Artificial Sweeteners | No |
| Added Sugar | No |
| Gut Friendly | No |
| Price Per Serving | $3.00 |
Verdict:
This is an excellent tasting protein with plenty of collagen to support skin, bones, and joints. It's also naturally flavored and comes in many flavors. However, it does have 180 calories per serving and costs almost $3 per serving.
Pros:
- 25g of Protein Per Scoop
- Protein, Collagen, and Mushrooms in One
- Grass-Fed Whey, Non-GMO, No Artificial Sweeteners
- The Most Filling of the Six
Cons:
- The Most Expensive Per Serving
- Only 17mg of Caffeine
- Tastes Like a Milkshake, Not Coffee
- Mushroom Sludge Left at the Bottom
What I Love
There's a lot to like about this protein powder. They have tons of great flavors, and it's really delicious and creamy. Plus, they use a combination of whey and collagen, which tends to be easier on the stomach and can support skin, hair, and joints too.
There's no junk, no artificial colors, no artificial flavors, and it's flavored with real fruit. Plus, they add cordyceps and reishi mushrooms to promote mental clarity and natural energy. Though some might not like that addition to a protein powder, I thought it was pretty unique.
What Could Be Better
While this option does have more protein than some, it's also 180 calories per serving, and that's not counting milk (water works but isn't as delicious). It's also very expensive, costing $3.00 per serving. The bag only comes with 20 servings at around $60.
Finally, while I didn't have a problem with the cordyceps and reishi, some people prefer their protein to be just protein. Plus, these mushrooms can cause side effects like bloating, nausea, altered blood sugar levels, and more.
Ascent
| Specs | Details |
|---|---|
| Protein Content | 20g per scoop |
| Taste | Faint coffee |
| Artificial Sweeteners | No |
| Added Sugar | 1g |
| Gut Friendly | No |
| Price Per Serving | $2.00 |
Verdict:
Ascent is a decent option with 20g of protein and 100mg of caffeine. The problem is that it causes bloating and gas, and the protein settles into sludge, which is why it lands as my fourth favorite despite the protein and caffeine content.
Pros:
- 20g of Protein Per Scoop
- 100mg of Caffeine for Steady Energy
- Part of a Full Sports Nutrition Range
Cons:
- Barely Tastes Like Coffee
- Stevia Can Upset a Sensitive Gut
- Foamy, Gritty, Settles Into Sludge
- Caused Bloating and Gas
What I Love
There's a lot to like about this protein coffee. It has 20g of protein, and it offers 100mg of caffeine for a steady energy boost. Plus, they have a whole sports nutrition lineup, which makes it easy to stick with one brand.
The 100mg of caffeine is my sweet spot for steady energy. Though the taste isn't really about coffee, the protein and caffeine combination is pretty useful.
What Could Be Better
There are a few things that prevent this protein coffee from ranking higher. First, it feels almost impossible to mix smoothly. It's always foamy and gritty. After it sits for a while, the protein settles into sludge at the bottom of the glass. However, that's not enough to hurt its ranking.
It's the gut problems that really prevent me from raving about Ascent. It caused me tons of bloating and gas every time I drank it. That was enough for me to choose another protein coffee for my daily use.
Everyday Dose
| Specs | Details |
|---|---|
| Protein Content | 10g per scoop |
| Taste | Sweet and creamy |
| Artificial Sweeteners | No |
| Added Sugar | No |
| Gut Friendly | No |
| Price Per Serving | $1.76 ($3.52 as dosed) |
Verdict:
Everyday Dose is a good option for creamy protein coffee, offering a good balance between coffee and protein. While it mixes easily without a frother, the main downside is the dosing, which made a 20-serving bag last only about 10 days.
Pros:
- Creamy, Well-Balanced Coffee and Protein
- Mixes Easily Without a Frother
- Free Shaker and Spoon Included
Cons:
- Heavy Dosing Empties a Bag in 10 Days
- Works Out Twice the Advertised Price
- Sneaky Subscription, Billed Every 30 Days
- 7g of Sugar Per Serving
What I Love
I love Everyday Dose for its good balance between coffee and protein, which makes it really creamy. There are no clumps left in the mug, and it still mixes really easily without a frother. Honestly, it's one of the easiest protein coffees I've ever tried, and it comes with goodies including a free shaker and spoon.
What Could Be Better
There are a couple of major issues I have with this protein coffee. First, the dosing. It might look like a good deal at first glance, but they recommend two servings for just 4 to 8 oz of milk, making it twice as expensive as advertised. Sugar content is a big issue for me — 7 grams per serving.
Javvy
| Specs | Details |
|---|---|
| Protein Content | 10g per scoop |
| Taste | Overly sweet |
| Artificial Sweeteners | No |
| Added Sugar | No |
| Gut Friendly | Yes (has Probiotics & Prebiotics) |
| Price Per Serving | $1.75 |
Verdict:
Javvy's protein coffee offers 18 flavors at a great $1.75-per-serving price, using natural sweeteners and adding probiotics and MCTs. The main drawback: it's too sweet with chemical taste, so you'll need to overlook the taste and clumpy texture to make it part of your routine.
Pros:
- 10g of Protein Per Scoop
- 18 Flavours to Choose From
- Prebiotics and MCTs for Gut Health
Cons:
- Too Sweet, With a Chemical Edge
- Clumpy Even in a Blender
- Powder Sticks to the Cup
- A Subscription You Get Locked Into
- Cancelling Is Email-Only
What I Love
This protein coffee offers 18 flavors to choose from, so there's something for everyone. At $1.75 per serving, it's solid for daily use, whether you choose Hazelnut, Vanilla, or another flavor. It adds probiotics and MCTs for gut health and uses natural sweeteners, so you know exactly what you're putting in your coffee cup.
What Could Be Better
Since this protein coffee uses several natural sweeteners, some flavors taste too chemical and sweet. That adds an unpleasant taste to the Hazelnut and Vanilla flavors I tried. It doesn't mix well even with a blender, powder sticks to the sides of the cup and the overall consistency stays clumpy.
